Acheson were assigned to deliver the refurbishment and conversion works to this landmark building at the heart of Bournemouth’s town centre. Bristol & West House located at ‘The Square’ created a few challenges for the site team.
The site logistics of working in a busy town centre site with limited access and storage facilities was dealt with successfully the team. Due to a lack of maintenance, the structural elements of the building required significant repair and refurbishment which included strengthening and replacement of structural steelwork and rebuilding of masonry columns to the external facades.
The initial phase of the development included the conversion of three upper floors of existing office accommodation to provide 28no luxury apartments. During the construction works the employer was granted further planning approval to convert the remaining floor to provide an additional 10no apartments.
Acheson successfully negotiated this additional portion of works to be incorporated as a variation to the existing contract. The works on site also involved the strip out and demolition of previous retail space on the ground floor and provision of services and builder’s work to facilitate a new restaurant and fast food outlet on the ground floor of the building.
Acheson worked in partnership with the employer, GGP Ltd, employer’s agent Bilfinger GVA and local architects BrightSpace to deliver this successful project.
